Watch Out!

Websites offering a divorce service for under £100 or sometimes even under £50 might seem inviting, especially when they claim to be "qualified lawyers".

We admit that it is hard to tell, even for us sometimes, which are operated by genuine solicitors and which are trying to pass themselves off as "lawyers" with little if any formal training or experience.

Does It Make Any Difference?

Yes it does. Solicitors are bound by rules of conduct and ethics that have evolved over centuries. We owe a duty of care to our clients and we are members of a professional body which operates a strict complaints procedure when necessary. And we have to be insured.

When you use the services of a qualified practicing solicitor, you can be assured that the solicitor will have had at least six years , not days or weeks, of professional legal training,and will have to attend compulsory training courses every few months throughout practice, to keep up to date with any changes in the law.

Anyone can put a newsflash about the McCartney divorce or Mr and Mrs Newsworthy's custody battle on a website. But only a solicitor is qualified to explain how it affects you .

Only a solicitor can make an application to court on your behalf, for example to deem service if your husband/wife is not cooperating with the proceedings.

Ask yourself, do you really want your divorce to be handled by a team of clerical staff "supervised" by a paralegal or someone with a law degree but no professional qualification?

Who will help you if it goes wrong? What will happen to your file afterwards? What are their policies on confidentiality? Who monitors that? Who fines them or punishes them if they don't  do what they say they will?
